Anxiety disorder, and panic attacks are terms that are cropping up more often, as they become more prevalent in our society.  We all have moments of anxiety, stress and fear.  But when do these everyday emotions become a problem?   

 

Our minds and bodies produce reactions for a reason.  You may be more motivated to accomplish something, or stay out of a dangerous situation.  But fears and anxiety can stop helping someone make appropriate responses in a situation, and become a major source of difficulty in themselves.  This overwhelming type of anxiety is what characterizes anxiety disorder.  There are five categories of anxiety disorders, which include Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Social Phobia.  People with these disorders experience significant symptoms in everyday situations that leave them unable to function at normal levels.  Anxiety disorders are treatable, and advances in studying anxiety bring a lot of hope for positive outcomes and relief from symptoms.

A person with Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by uncontrollable worry and stress about typical everyday life issues.   They are afraid the worst will happen and even simple tasks get blown out of proportion as the person feels like they are barely hanging on.Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder has two main components, the obsession and the compulsion.  The obsession is something that the person is worried about, like germs.  The compulsion is a ritual that is created to relieve anxiety about the obsession. If the obsession is germs, the compulsion might be out of control hand washing, to the extent that a person's skin could become damaged by the incessant washing.    

Panic disorder is the struggle with panic attacks, though panic attacks may be present in any of the anxiety disorders.  A panic attack is a sudden onslaught of fear or terror, often with physical symptoms.  They may feel faint, sweaty, think they are having a heart attack, feel very hot or cold, sick to their stomach or like they are smothering. The sense of reality is lost, replaced by out of control fear and dread.   The attacks are so stressful, fear of another attack can become debilitating as the dread must be avoided at all costs. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has three main types of symptoms that are caused after experiencing trauma.  The first type causes the person to re-experience the original event.  This may be through flashbacks, nightmares or disturbing thoughts. 

The second deals with avoiding the event.  The person may avoid triggers that remind them of the event.  They can shut down emotionally, and have difficulty connecting with others.  The third is the element of hyper arousal, a constant state of unreasonable alert to danger. Social Phobia concentrates the anxiety on interactions with other people.  A person is obsessed with how other people are viewing and judging them and their actions.  It may be limited to certain situations like public speaking, or general enough to affect any contact with others. All of these forms of anxiety disorders and panic attacks can be reduced or controlled.  The most effective methods are with medication and therapy.  If stress and anxiety start limiting a person's choices in life, there is help.
